Resume Tips for New Dental Assistants

For new dental assisting graduates applying for a first dental assistant job.

By Resume Star · Updated October 2026

You finished your dental assisting program and your externship. Now the job posts ask for experience. Dental offices hire new assistants often, and what they need most is someone who's certified, knows infection control, and can help patients feel at ease.

The tips below show you how to list your certifications, turn your externship into experience, and show the patient care and front-office skills you already have.

7 tips for a dental assistant resume with no experience

  1. Put your certifications at the top. Your state's credential (such as RDA or CDA), radiography (X-ray), coronal polish or sealants if your state allows them, and BLS / CPR.
  2. Use your externship as experience. List the office, the dates, the hours and what you did: chairside assisting, setting up and breaking down rooms, X-rays, sterilization and patient education.
  3. Name the procedures you've assisted with. Cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, sealants, or orthodontic adjustments. Even a few shows you know what to expect chairside.
  4. Show infection control. Sterilizing instruments, operatory turnover and OSHA standards are a big part of the job. Make sure they're on your resume.
  5. Show front-office skills. Scheduling, check-in, insurance verification and dental software like Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental make you more useful to a small office.
  6. Count other patient or customer work. Jobs in healthcare, child care, retail or food service show you can stay calm and kind with people. One or two bullet points each is enough.
  7. Write a short summary. "Certified dental assistant with 300 hours of externship in a family practice. Skilled in digital X-rays and sterilization, and calm with nervous patients and children." Two sentences is enough.

Before and after

Before

Dental assisting externship. Helped the dentist.

After

Completed 300 hours of chairside and front-office training in a pediatric practice. Took digital X-rays, sterilized instruments and helped children feel comfortable during cleanings and sealants.

The second version names the hours, the skills and the patients. An office manager can see you'd fit in from the first week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a dental assistant job with no experience?

Yes. Many offices hire new graduates, and some train assistants on the job. Your certifications, externship and a friendly, reliable work history are what they look for.

How do I list my externship?

Treat it like a job. Put the office name, "Dental Assistant Extern" as the title, the dates and the hours. Then add 2 or 3 bullet points about what you did.

Do I need to be certified to work as a dental assistant?

It depends on your state. Some states let you work with on-the-job training, while others require a credential or an X-ray certificate. Check your state dental board.

Should I include jobs outside dentistry?

Yes. They show you can keep a job and work with people. Keep each to 1 or 2 bullet points about patient care, customer service or reliability.

Should I mention that I want to become a dental hygienist?

Yes, briefly. Some offices help with school. When you get there, see the dental hygienist resume example.

Is a one-page resume enough?

Yes. For a first dental assistant job, one page is right. Put your certifications and externship near the top.

Dental assistant titles, duties and certification rules vary by state. Check your state dental board for what applies to you.
