Resume Tips for Experienced Managers
For managers with 10 or more years of experience, including a long career at one company.
You've built teams, fixed broken processes, and kept things running through busy seasons, budget cuts and reorganizations. Maybe you've done it all at one company, rising through the ranks. Now you're looking for your next role, and you may not have written a resume in a long time.
The tips below show you how to turn a long career into a clear, modern resume: one that shows your promotions, puts your results in numbers, and makes it obvious what you can do for the next employer.
7 tips for an experienced manager resume
- Start with a summary that sells your level. Two or three sentences with your years of experience, the size of the teams and budgets you've run, and what you're known for. "General manager with 10+ years leading 100+ person operations" sets the level right away.
- Show your promotions at one company. List the company once, then each title under it with its own dates and bullet points. Moving from supervisor to manager to director at one employer shows that people trusted you with more, again and again.
- Lead every bullet with a result. Revenue, costs, safety, turnover, on-time delivery, customer scores. "Cut overtime costs 18% in one year" says more than "responsible for scheduling".
- Give the scale. The number of people, direct reports, locations, and the size of the budget. Scale is what separates a manager role from a senior one.
- Give the most detail to the last 10 to 15 years. Those roles get 3 to 5 bullet points. If your career goes back further, earlier roles go under "Earlier Career" with the title and company only.
- Prove your skills are current. Name the systems you use: ERP (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite), Excel, Power BI or Tableau, and project tools. Add recent training, certifications (Lean, Six Sigma, PMP) and any remote or hybrid teams you've led.
- Use two pages, with the best on page one. Two pages is normal at your level. Your summary, key skills and most recent role should fit on the first page. Leave out graduation years.
Before and after
Responsible for managing the warehouse team and making sure orders went out on time.
Led a 120-person distribution team across 2 shifts. Raised on-time shipping from 91% to 98% and cut overtime 18% by redesigning pick routes and schedules.
The second version gives the scale, the results and how you got them. A hiring manager can see what you'd do for them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I show several jobs at the same company?
List the company name once with your total dates, then each title underneath with its own dates and bullet points. This makes your promotions easy to see, and keeps your resume from looking like you only had one job.
I've been at one company a long time. Will that look bad?
No. Long tenure shows loyalty and that you were trusted with more over time. Make sure your resume shows growth (new titles, bigger teams, new responsibilities) and that your skills match what employers use today.
Should I list every job I've had?
Not in full. Give dates and bullet points for the last 10 to 15 years. List earlier roles in an "Earlier Career" section with the title and company only, or leave them out if they don't relate to the job you want.
Do I include my graduation year?
No. List the degree and the school. Employers need to know you have the degree, not when you earned it. If an application form asks for dates, answer it there.
I'm changing industries. What changes?
Rewrite your summary for the new industry, and lead with skills that carry over: leading teams, budgets, process improvement and hiring. Use plain words rather than terms only your current company uses.
Is a two-page resume OK?
Yes. With 10 or more years of management experience, two pages is normal. Keep your summary, skills and most recent role on page one.
