Resume for Over 50: Example and Tips for Experienced Workers

Twenty or thirty years of experience is a strength. The goal of your resume is to show that experience without making it easy to guess your age. These tips work whether you're over 50, have spent most of your career at one company, or are returning to work after time away.

Tips for an experienced resume

  • Lead with a professional summary. Say how many years of experience you have and what you're best at, in two or three sentences.
  • Give details for the last 10–15 years only. List those jobs with dates and your top results. Earlier jobs go in an "Earlier Career" section with just the title and company.
  • Leave out graduation years. List the degree or certificate and the school. Employers need to know you have it, not when you earned it.
  • Put licenses and certifications near the top. In healthcare, the trades, driving and manufacturing, they're often the first thing a hiring manager checks.
  • Use numbers. Team size, budget, output, safety record and on-time rates show the value of long experience better than descriptions do.
  • Show that your skills are current. Name the software and equipment you use today, such as Microsoft 365, Epic, ELD systems or CNC controls.
  • Many years at one company? List each promotion as its own job under the same company, so your growth is easy to see.
  • Returning after a gap? Put recent training, certifications, volunteer work or caregiving in Recent Experience, and keep the summary focused on what you can do now.
