Resume Tips for Experienced HVAC Technicians

For HVAC service and install technicians with 10 or more years of experience.

By Resume Star · Updated October 2026

After 10 or more years in HVAC, you've seen almost every system and every problem. You can diagnose a no-cool call fast, explain the options to a homeowner, and show a new tech how to do it right. Good service techs are hard to find, and your resume should make that obvious.

The tips below show you how to list your certifications, name the systems you know, and put your service record, sales and training into numbers.

7 tips for an experienced HVAC technician resume

  1. Put your certifications at the top. EPA 608 (Universal or the types you hold), NATE specialties, and any state or city mechanical license. Add OSHA 10 or 30 if you have it.
  2. Name the systems and brands you know. Split systems, heat pumps, gas furnaces, boilers, ductless mini-splits, rooftop units, chillers or refrigeration. Brands like Carrier, Trane, Lennox or Mitsubishi help when a company sells them.
  3. Give your service numbers. Calls per day, first-time fix rate, callbacks, and your customer review average. These show a service manager how you'd perform from day one.
  4. Show what you sell. Replacements, upgrades and maintenance plans bring revenue to the company. If you sold them, give the dollar amount or the number of plans.
  5. Show residential and commercial work separately. Many companies hire for one or the other. Make it clear which you've done and at what size.
  6. Show the leadership that comes with experience. Lead tech, training and riding along with new techs, handling the tough calls, or running installs. Give numbers where you can.
  7. Give the most detail to the last 10 to 15 years. If your career goes back further, earlier jobs go under "Earlier Experience" with the title and company only.

Frequently asked questions

Should I list my EPA 608 certification number?

You don't need to. List the certification and type (for example "EPA 608 Universal"). Employers will ask for the card or number if they need it.

How do I show I keep up with new equipment?

Name the newest systems you work on, such as variable-speed and inverter heat pumps, smart thermostats and controls, or low-GWP refrigerants. Add recent manufacturer training with the year.

Can I apply for a service manager or lead tech job?

Yes. Rewrite your summary for that role, and move training, scheduling, quality checks and customer escalations to the top of each job.

Should I include my own HVAC business?

Yes. List it like a job, with the services, number of customers and any employees. Running a business shows you can handle customers, pricing and scheduling.

Do I need to list my driving record?

Most service jobs need a valid driver's license, and many check your record. A short line like "Valid driver's license, clean record" is helpful if it is true.

Is a two-page resume OK?

Yes, with 10 or more years of experience. Keep your certifications, summary and most recent job on page one.

License requirements for HVAC work vary by state and city. Check your local licensing board for what applies to you.
